Josipa Terzić – Rezić, director of MICE.ba and member of the Croatian Meeting and Event Professionals Association (HUPKT), recently took part in a MIM study trip through Zadar and Biograd na Moru. MICE.BA is the only agency from Bosnia and Herzegovina holding HUPKT membership.
The trip covered a range of conference hotels, exclusive venues and incentive locations along the northern Dalmatian coast. What follows is a practical review for international organisers considering Croatia for their next conference, congress or incentive programme.
Why Zadar and Biograd na Moru?
Both cities are well connected by air and road. Zadar Airport has direct flights from over 40 European cities. Biograd na Moru is 25 kilometres south of Zadar, with easy transfers. The region offers a combination of urban congress venues, heritage spaces and nature locations that work well for different types of events and group sizes.
Ilirija Hotels, Biograd na Moru
The Ilirija group presented three properties during the trip: Hotel Ilirija, Hotel Kornati and Hotel Adriatic, all situated directly on the seafront in Biograd. Each property has its own character and congress capacity. Together they cover a broad range of group sizes, from smaller corporate meetings to larger congresses with breakout sessions and gala dinners. The in-house teams are experienced with international groups and the venue coordination is straightforward.
Event Vessel Nada
One of the more practical discoveries on the trip was the event vessel Nada, a 35-metre boat with capacity for 185 guests. The boat is fitted with a professional kitchen, bar, audiovisual equipment and a light show system. It operates as a floating event space for business receptions, gala dinners and private corporate events. The route can be personalised, as can the menu and technical setup for presentations. For groups that want something beyond a hotel ballroom, this works well.
Arsenal, Zadar
The Arsenal in Zadar is a 16th-century Venetian building in the heart of the old town, now operating as a multifunctional event space. It holds conferences, concerts, exhibitions and formal dinners. The building is a Category Zero cultural monument. The setting carries its own atmosphere and requires little additional production to create a memorable event. Groups that want a historically significant venue in a central urban location will find this a practical and distinctive option.
Maškovića Han, Pakoštan
Built in the 17th century, Maškovića Han is the best-preserved Ottoman caravanserai in Croatia. It now operates as a heritage hotel and event space. The property is suited to events that require a strong sense of place, smaller in scale but high in character. It works well for boutique incentive programmes, leadership retreats and private group dinners.
Ražnjevića dvori AD 1307, Zadar Hinterland
This estate combines guest accommodation with local gastronomy and wine production. The guided tour, lunch and wine tasting gave a clear picture of how the venue operates for groups. The setting is intimate and the quality of the F&B is a genuine draw. For incentive programmes that want a rural Dalmatian experience away from the coast, this is a practical choice.
Vila Primorje and Marina Kornati, Biograd na Moru
Vila Primorje is a seafront residence with a private park, suitable for exclusive private events and small group stays. Marina Kornati is one of the more developed marinas on the Adriatic and has conference and event facilities with sea views. Both are suited to corporate receptions, gala dinners and high-end incentive components.
Vransko Jezero Nature Reserve and Kamenjak Viewpoint
The trip included time in the Zadar hinterland: a guided walk along Vransko Jezero, Croatia’s largest natural lake and ornithological reserve, followed by a visit to the Kamenjak viewpoint with views across the lake and the coast. These locations are relevant for incentive programmes and team activities that benefit from a natural setting close to the city. The combination of coast and nature within a short drive of Zadar is a practical asset for multi-day programmes.
What the Trip Confirmed?
Zadar and Biograd na Moru have congress and incentive infrastructure in place and the local teams are experienced with international groups. The range of settings available, from urban heritage venues to coastal hotels and rural estates, makes it possible to build a multi-day programme with genuine variety. Croatia has a more developed MICE market than Bosnia and Herzegovina, and the conversations with Croatian colleagues were as valuable as the venue visits. Those professional relationships are part of what makes it possible to deliver well for clients in the region.
